Since 1989, MIU IV’s Very Special Arts has celebrated the abilities of special needs students (K-12) through an art exhibit held at Grove City College. From the 30 participants 20 years ago, to the nearly 700 participants in recent years, our regional exhibit brings together students, teachers, families and the general public at an opening reception where the young artists receive certificates and programs listed all participants. VSA Arts (formerly Very Special Arts) is an international nonprofit organization affiliated with the education programs of the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington D.C. It is designed to give special needs children and adults the opportunity to develop and showcase their creative abilities. Very Special Arts is founded on the belief that the arts are a universal language that challenge people to look beyond themselves and celebrate their diversity. This year, MIU IV's VSA exhibit is sponsored by Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV, McDonald's of London PA, PSEA/ Midwestern Region PSEA, MIU IV Education Association, and the Midwestern Arts & Humanities Foundation. Grove City College hosts the exhibit and provides the refreshments for the opening reception. What teachers say: “I love the Very Special Arts Exhibit!! Thank you for all of the time and effort that you put into an outstanding children’s art exhibit. Year after year, your show helps to instill a sense of pride and accomplishment in a number of my students who, in some cases, rarely get to experience the feeling of success. It also gives the community the opportunity to view the very creative minds that our children have. I am proud to have my student’s art work exhibited in your show and I will continue to encourage my Sharpsville families to take the time to experience the thrill of seeing their child’s art work on display in such a professional gallery setting. Keep up the good work! My students and I are already looking forward to next year.” ...Yvonne DelFratte, Elementary Art Teacher, Sharpsville Area School District. “ I just wanted to say thank you again for giving our students a chance to shine! For some of them, it is the only chance they have to shine and that is why your job is so important and special.” ...Linda Jacobs, Art Teacher, Union Area School District. |
