Arts in Education

MIU IV's Arts in Education Programs

The arts give us the creativity to express ourselves, while challenging our intellect. The arts integrate life and learning for all students and are integral in the development of the whole person. The arts communicate and speak to us in ways that teach literacy and enhance our lives. We must continue to find a place for arts programs and partnerships not only for what it teaches students about art, but for what it teaches us all about the world we live in. (-Dr. Terry Bergeson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Washington State, November 2001)

Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV offers enrichment programs in the arts for students and teachers in Butler, Lawrence and Mercer Counties.

Now approaching it's 22nd year, Very Special Arts is an annual exhibit for special needs students, K-12, sponsored by the IU and hosted by Grove City College. Over 700 students participate annually from nearly all of the 27 school districts.

Just completing it's 22nd year, the Summer Visual and Performing Arts Academy is a 2-week residential program in visual arts, jazz, creative writing, theater and dance at Slippery Rock University for hgih school students. Sponsored by SRU, Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV, and the Regional Governor's Schools of Excellence, this program gives students an intense experience in the arts and a taste of college life. Students receive one college credit for attending the Academy.

Our newest partnerships are with the Pittsburgh Opera and City Theatre in Pittsburgh's South Side. Both of these programs are innovative professional development opportunities that help teachers integrate the arts into their classrooms in exciting and meaningful ways.

Also, the IU created a Foundation several years ago to help support the arts and humanities in area schools and communities. Governed by their own board of directors, the Midwestern Arts and Humanities Foundation provides opportunities for Artist-in-Residency programs in the schools, supports community arts programs such as the Guthrie Arts Guild's Luncheon Concert Series and offers summer scholarships for high school students attending arts programs.
