In October 2001, the Board of Directors of Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV adopted Policy #705 directing that a safety program be established with the “primary objective of providing a safe, healthy environment for students, employees and the general public.” The Board recognized that safety consciousness of the staff needs to be an ongoing concern and directed that a management team comprised of MIU IV’s service areas be formed to address and provide guidance on safety awareness, accidents/incidents, buildings and grounds inspection, best practices concerning use of vehicles, loss of control procedures, insurer recommendations, safety programs and employee communication. Stephen P. Dalansky, Risk Management Consultant from Gleason Agency, conducted a safety committee training in the areas of accident investigation, hazard recognition (safety inspections) and safety committee operations at the November meeting. The committee is in the process of drafting and adopting by-laws, and reviewing current procedures and incident investigation forms. Any comments, suggestions, or ideas are welcome from all staff members.
